Training Requirements
The regulations require that each hazmat employee who performs any function subject to the regulations be trained and retrained (Subpart H of Part 172 in 49CFR). Similar requirements for training are mandated in the ICAO Technical Instructions, the IMDG Code, and the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.
DOT defines a hazmat employee as a person who in the course of employment directly affects hazardous materials transportation safety. The term includes an individual who:
- Loads, unloads, or handles hazardous materials;
- Manufactures, tests, reconditions, repairs, modifies, marks, or otherwise represents containers, drums, or packaging as qualified for use in the transportation of hazardous materials;
- Prepares hazardous materials for transportation;
- Is responsible for safety of transporting hazardous materials; or
- Operates a vehicle used to transport hazardous materials.
Individuals who attend our courses include, Traffic Managers, Compliance Managers, Transportation Analysts, Freight Rate Analysts, Warehouse Supervisors, Shipping and Receiving Clerks, Packers, Health and Safety Managers, Drivers, Training Instructors, Purchasing Agents, General Managers, and many others.
When Training Must Occur
Initial Training is required within 90 days of employment and before performing any regulated function. Recurrent training is required at least once every three years.
Note: Training is also required when regulations and requirements change. At JMB HAZMAT, we continuously update our course materials to reflect the latest changes as they occur.
Initial Training vs. Recurrent Training
Initial training is intended to provide students with the regulatory skills required to properly and safely prepare shipments of hazardous materials for transportation. In an initial class, each area of the regulations are covered in specific detail to ensure that the student has a thorough understanding of the requirements as they relate to each function. Initial training is designed for newer employees who have little or no previous training or on the job experience using the regulations.
Recurrent (or refresher) training is training that is intended to ensure that hazmat employees retain the knowledge and skills that were obtained through initial training and subsequent on the job experience. In a recurrent class, the information that is covered in an initial class is reviewed in a shorter time frame.
The requirement for recurrent training may be satisfied through an initial or recurrent training class.
